Allow me to say that a return to NiCd cells as the Airbus did with their A350 would set the so far achieved energy-storage progress unnecessarily back. There are more types of cells/batteries based on much modern physical principles (NiZn, LiFePO4), often developed for automotive, UAS, submarine and similar vehicular applications, that would fill the bill regarding the charge density/capacity/weight/voltage, and, last but not least, the safety aspects. They are much more resistant or even completely immune to the (practically unextinguishable) Li-Ion self-sustaining fire, allowing to replace the LiIon batteries, whose caging in blast- and fireproof, overboard-vented compartments, allowing for safe in-flight burnout of tens of kilos of highly flammable contents, could still cause a headache at airline maintenance and safety departments, if not at manufacturers' design and certification ones. And let's presume that also the possibly overly obliging FAA, that seemed to go overboard to help the sole US manufacturer pioneering the composites in an airliner to catch back the years-long slip of Dreamliner deliveries, would again pay the necessary attention to the safety aspect of every revolutionary solution applied to a civil aircraft. I clearly remember the five-year grilling of the less-than-preferred Czech Walter company that in early nineties applied for US certification of its M-601 turboprop (now the GE H-80), that by that time has been flying safely in hundreds of L-410 commuters tens of thousands of hours around the world...
